About Us

The Nigerian Peace Corps is a uniformed, paramilitary, non-security organization composed of volunteer officers from both the National Unity and Peace Corps (NUPEC) and the Peace Corps of Nigeria (PCN). Following the merger of these organizations, the Nigerian Peace Corps was established by the National Assembly through the consolidation of Senate Bills SB173 and SB183. The Nigerian Peace Corps bill is currently pending passage by the Nigerian Senate and subsequent presidential assent.

The consolidated bills place the Nigerian Peace Corps under the Federal Ministry of Interior, which previously oversaw the National Unity Peace Corps. The organization has offices in all 36 states of the federation as well as in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

History

The history of the Nigerian Peace Corps is closely linked to its founding father, the late Professor Humphrey Ogoegbunam. After returning from the United States in 1987, he established NUPEC to mediate in times of crisis and foster national cohesion and unity. In 1988, Professor Ogoegbunam was summoned for questioning by the Directorate of Military Intelligence at Arakan Barracks, Apapa, after which the program was officially approved on January 12, 1988, at the request of our then adviser, Professor Jubril Aminu.

In June 1988, the presidency directed Professor Ogoegbunam to register NUPEC with the Federal Ministry of Internal Affairs, under Alhaji Dr. Chief Abdulrahman Okene, then Secretary. Following this, the Lagos State Ministry of Home Affairs officially recommended NUPEC’s approval to the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) on July 9, 1991. Subsequently, in 1991, Professor Ogoegbunam registered NUPEC with the CAC, receiving Certificate of Incorporation No. RC 6265 on August 11, 1991.

Significant Contributions

Due to the significant contributions made by Professor Ogoegbunam nationwide, the Federal Ministry of Internal Affairs issued NUPEC an Operational License (MIA/C&B/81/288) in November 2006, allowing the organization to conduct its activities without interference from security agencies.
